In my trajectory as a painter, spanning over two decades, I have undergone a profound artistic metamorphosis, navigating the currents of avant-garde exploration, collage, drawing, figurative painting, and a slow transition to abstract expressionism, and now a subsequent shift to an expressive blend of the representational and abstract. This transition from experimentation to a refined focus can be seen as nature broken down into light, form, surface, and color, which represents a deliberate evolution in my creative process.
In the last few years, I’ve been inspired by the Nabis School of Post-Impressionism. I’ve incorporated the influences of Bonnard, Vuillard, and others not merely as an aesthetic homage but as a guidepost for navigating the emotive feeling and image. In particular, I found the window, the view of nature through a passage, as a way of relating to beauty and longing. Alongside art history, I find influence in the natural world as well. The subtle influence of spending my formative years growing up in Florida surfaces. The hyper-color, fantastical sunsets, waves, and flowers through which a youth mind finds escape or a calling to the sea are now surfacing. Blending these influences allows for an exploration of abstraction touching on the spiritual, although not a departure from the classical -but a recalibration, where flowers melt into color, form, and gesture, where abstraction finds itself becoming nature. I endeavor to infuse expression with the resonance of beauty and the unknown.
Amidst the complexities of life's challenges, my role as a painter takes on added significance as I strive to channel a sense of hope, light, and aspiration into my paintings. When life feels daunting and overwhelming, I find solace in the act of painting itself—a therapeutic endeavor that allows me to transcend personal struggles through the transformative power of creation. I aim to convey the struggle and the resilience that comes with seeking light amidst darkness. The paintings, borne of a synthesis between exploratory abstraction and the grounding elements of traditional imagery, beckon viewers to consider where the tangible and intangible converge. These paintings are not just visual statements; they speak to the joy I find in the exploration of color, the embrace of process, and the journey of artistic discovery.
